Seated Figure From the Idoma Tribe, Benue Area of Nigeria

Seated Figure From the Idoma Tribe, Benue Area of Nigeria

  • £18,500.00

Seated figure from the Idoma Tribe, first half of the 20th Century.

Carved in a local hardwood this figure of a beautiful female, depicts Anjenu. She represents the ultimate female form, resplendent and in her prime, seated on a throne and personifying fecundity. She has been given even more power by the addition of tribal scarification to her face and abdomen.
She belongs to Idoma tribe, who traditional made money as traders between the inland tribes and those of the costal region. They number some 500,000 peoples predominantly farmers and traders, Artistically they have achieved a high reputation for their fecundity figures, owing and open mouth with carved teeth and vertical scarification on the temples.

Here is such a splendid example, the whitening adds a further dimension to her appeal, as was (the original addition of) hair, of which now, only the pins and cotton remain. She also has been given simple bangles for some special occasion. Normally such important pieces are kept in shrines where they are venerated and placated with gifts in hope they will intercede with appeals for the worshipers to become pregnant.

90cm high, 24cm wide and 30cm deep.
