Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) was an English architect, designer, artist and critic. He is principally remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic revival style of architecture. His work culminated in 1836 with the designing of the interior of the Palace of Westminster and its iconic clock tower, which houses the bell known as Big Ben. His fragile health suffered greatly from his exertions working on the palace. He was committed to Bedlam for a short period and died soon after in 1852.
